Kashmir has been a cradle of Sanatana Dharma and the Indic civilization. Sharada Peeth was an ancient centre of learning located in Kashmir, India. Between the 6th and 12th centuries CE, it was among the most prominent temple universities in the Indian subcontinent. Known in particular for its enormous library, also referred to as Saraswathi Bhandaram, stories recount scholars travelling long distances to access its texts.
Saraswathi Bhandaram is recounted to have housed many Indian spiritual texts, commentaries from scholars, works from scholars of multiple schools of Sanatana Dharma. It played a key role in the development and popularisation of the Sharada script in North India, causing the script to be named after it, and Kashmir to acquire the moniker “Sharada Desh”,meaning “Country of Saraswathi”.
The Saraswathi Bhandaram Digital Library will be our Nation’s pride and a prized possession. It will be an iconic testimony of the Sanathana Dharma prevalent in India for ages and will testify the timeless philosophy of Swami Ramanuja’s “Vasudhaiva Kutumbakam”.
The library will be one of the best knowledge centres for all the works of great scholars of Sanatana Dharma, with special attention to Kashmiri scholars and saints as well as those who visited Kashmir like Sri Adi Shankaracharya, Sri Ramanuajacharya, Smt Lal Ded, Sri Utpaladeva, Sri Abhinava Gupta and many such pandits.
This library will hold stock of digitally and physically books, manuscripts and contents from all over the world, specially ancient works of and on Sanatana Dharma including those that originated from Kashmir.
When established fully, this Digital Library is poised to be one of the biggest libraries in the world in terms of its diversity, quality and variety of digital books on Sanathana Dharma to benefit the readers, globally and will be positioned both as off-line and an on-line destination through dedicated website.
With collaboration and involvement of as many mutts, religious, non-religious institutions and cultural organisations who share the same goal, this Saraswathi Bhandaram will be recreated as an abode for Goddess Saraswathi in Kashmir, in the near future.
